Some of its land even stretches into Eastern Europe. It is the largest landlocked country in the whole world. This means it is not next to an ocean. However, it does have a coastline along the Caspian Sea. The country borders Russia to the north and west. It also sits near China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. The capital city is named Astana. The largest city is Almaty, which was the capital until 1997.

There are about 20.5 million people living in Kazakhstan. It has one of the lowest population densities on Earth. This means there are fewer than 8 people in each square kilometer. Most people are ethnic Kazakhs, but many Russians also live there. While many people follow Islam, there is also a large Christian community.

History in this region goes back a very long time. People have lived here since the Paleolithic era. The Botai culture lived here between 3700 and 3100 BC. They are credited with the first domestication of horses.

Long ago, the land was part of the great Silk Roads. Many different groups moved through these vast steppes. These included the Saka, the Scythians, and later Turkic nomads. In the 13th century, the Mongol Empire ruled the area. After the Mongol rule ended, the Kazakh Khanate was established in the 15th century.

The Kazakh Khanate was a powerful state for many years. During the reign of Kasym Khan, the state was very strong. He helped make the Kazakhs a sovereign people. Later, the khanate split into three different groups called jüz. These were the Great Horde, the Middle Horde, and the Little Horde. Eventually, the Russian Empire conquered these lands by the mid-19th century. Kazakhstan then became part of the Soviet Union. It was the last Soviet republic to become independent in 1991.
