Life in Nyala has been very hard due to recent conflicts. During the Darfur conflict, many people moved near the city for safety. About 90,000 people lived in a refugee camp called Kalma. Later, in 2023, a civil war caused more trouble. The RSF captured parts of the city and the airport.

Over 600,000 people had to leave their homes in the region. By October, more than 670,000 people had fled because of the fighting.

There are also many challenges with daily needs like water and school. The land is hot and dry, which makes water hard to find. Most people use water from under the ground. However, this water can have germs because of poor waste management. This can make people feel sick. Schools in the area have grown since the year 2000. But many teachers are underpaid, and some children must work to help their families.
