The Kalma refugee camp, located in the southern part of Nyala, held about 90,000 people. Later, the Sudanese civil war caused even more movement. In April 2023, the RSF captured the airport and the eastern part of the city. Satellite images showed that militias destroyed parts of Nyala and nearby villages. By October 2023, reports stated the RSF took control of the city. This conflict forced more than 670,000 people to flee their homes. Local activists noted that over 600,000 people could not receive humanitarian aid due to the fighting.
Daily life in Nyala faces challenges regarding water and education. The city has a hot semi-arid climate, known as Köppen BSh. This means the area receives almost all its rainfall annually, but evaporation is extremely high. Most people rely on groundwater for their needs. However, this water is often contaminated due to poor sanitation and waste management. Bacteria levels in the water have tested higher than what is allowed. This happens because the water is sometimes not properly chlorinated during distribution. In education, the number of schools grew significantly between 2000 and 2010. Primary schools rose from 135 to 308, and secondary schools rose from 58 to 106. 
As of July 2025, Nyala has seen new administrative changes. It is now the administrative seat for the Sudanese Transitional Peace Government. This group is also called the Government of Peace and Unity. Local authorities report that the "Federal Police" have resumed policing duties. A military police cohort from the RSF was also tasked with crime control. Engineering teams have repurposed several buildings for government use. The ministry of agriculture and the land registry now serve as offices for the prime minister and the presidential council. Despite recent struggles, traders report that the main market has finally reopened after a two-year shutdown.
