Life in Kerma changed many times over a long period. First, hunter-gatherers lived there around 8350 BC. Later, the site was empty for a while because the Nile River flow decreased. Around 3000 BC, people began to practice agriculture. This helped a new culture grow in the area. By 1700 BC, the city held at least 10,000 people.

The people of Kerma were very talented makers. They used copper and bronze to make things. They even had a special bronze workshop in the main city. They were famous for making beautiful blue items called faience. They also worked with glazed quartzite and building inlays. These skills helped them stay independent from neighbors like Egypt.

Archaeologists have studied Kerma to learn its secrets. George Reisner led big expeditions there between 1913 and 1916. At first, he thought Kerma was just a small city ruled by Egypt. However, later researchers like Charles Bonnet found the truth. They found houses, workshops, and palaces. This proved Kerma was a strong and independent capital city.

Kerma also had a very large cemetery with over 30,000 graves. Some graves were much larger than others. This shows that some people held more power in society. Many graves contained items like pottery and cattle skulls. Some tombs even had artwork of Egyptian gods like Horus. These items show that Kerma traded many goods with ancient Egypt.
