It sits between the confluence of the Blue and White Niles and the First Cataract. This area is part of both modern Egypt and Sudan. The region is divided into three main parts based on the river. These are Lower Nubia, Middle Nubia, and Upper Nubia. Lower Nubia is the part furthest north, near the coast.

Upper Nubia is the part furthest south, upstream. The land has many important river features called cataracts. These are places where the river flows through rocky areas.

Ancient people lived in this land for a very long time.

Some evidence shows people lived in camps here 50,000 years ago. Around 5000 BC, people began to farm and keep animals. They raised sheep, goats, and cattle as the Sahara became drier.

This was a big change in how they lived. They also made beautiful pottery and used bows and arrows. These early hunters helped start the famous Nubian archer culture. Some of their stone structures are even older than Stonehenge.

Many strong groups and empires rose in Nubia over the years.

Later, Christian kingdoms like Nobatia and Makuria lived in the region. These kingdoms lasted for a very long time. Eventually, the land was divided by the Ottoman Empire and the Sennar sultanate.

Nubians were known for many clever skills and inventions.

They were such good archers that Egyptians called Nubia "The Land of the Bow." They also used math to create early sunclocks.
