The land around the city is mostly a flat plain. This area is called the Tihama coastal plain. It is very long and wide. The ground slopes gently down toward the sea. You might see small sand dunes in some areas. Some parts of the land have large rocks and gravel. These pieces of rock come from streams in the mountains. These streams carry things down from the high hills. There are also many valleys that flow into the sea.

History shows that Hodeidah has changed many times. The name was first written down in the year 1454 or 1455. Later, the Ottoman Turks helped develop the city as a seaport. In 1914, German troops built a wireless station there. This station helped send messages over long distances. The city also faced a very bad fire in 1961. This fire destroyed a lot of the city. People used help from the Soviet Union to rebuild it.

The port is a very busy place for trade. It handles about 70% of the goods Yemen buys. It also brings in most of the humanitarian aid. This aid is very important for helping people. The port exports many things like coffee and cotton. It also sends out dates and hides. In the past, people made striped cotton cloth here. They also made sandals and worked with leather. The city was once famous for its fine coffee.

There are many interesting things to see near the coast. You can find over 40 islands in the Red Sea. Some of these islands are named Kamaran and Taqfash. The Hanish Islands are also nearby. The weather in Hodeidah is very hot. It has a desert climate, so it stays dry. The city is a vital link to the rest of the world. It connects Yemen to many other far-away lands.
