It is also known as the "Southern Capital" and the "Humour Capital."

As a seaport, Odesa plays a huge role in moving goods around the world.

The city hosts the Port of Odesa and the Port Pivdennyi. This second port is a large terminal for oil. There is also the port of Chornomorsk nearby in the same region. These ports work together with railway lines to move many items. Huge pipelines also connect the city's oil and chemical sites to Europe. This makes the city a vital part of global trade networks.

Odesa has a history that stretches back thousands of years.

Long ago, a large Greek settlement existed in this very spot. Some researchers think it might have been the city of Histria. Later, many different groups ruled the area. These included the Golden Horde and the Ottoman Empire. In 1415, a ship even sailed from a local port to Constantinople. By 1794, the Russian empress Catherine II ordered the creation of a navy harbor here.

In the 1800s, it was the fourth largest city in the Russian Empire. The architecture looks more Mediterranean than Russian. You can see many French and Italian styles in the buildings. Some structures use styles like Art Nouveau and Renaissance. In 2023, the historic city centre became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This was done to recognize its special urban planning. However, the site is also on a list of places in danger due to damage from the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Today, Odesa is a multiethnic cultural centre with a unique identity.

The city is famous for its beautiful opera house and grand streets. One famous street, Deribasivska Street, is named after a Spanish general named José de Ribas. The city's name has also changed in how people spell it in English. For a long time, many used the spelling "Odessa." Now, most people use the official Ukrainian spelling, "Odesa." This change reflects the country's own official naming systems. It remains a place where history and modern life meet by the sea.
