Nature provides many useful materials in this region. The ground contains layers of loess and other types of rock. This makes it easy to find building materials like limestone, chalk, and sand. There are also deposits of things like peat, shale, and even oil. The climate is moderately continental. This means the summers are warm and the winters are cold. In July, the average temperature is about 20 degrees Celsius. In January, it drops to about 0 degrees Celsius.
