Many people also call this area Prykarpattia. It sits near the borders of several other places. To the north and west, it touches Lviv Oblast. To the south-west, it meets Zakarpattia Oblast. It also borders Chernivtsi Oblast and Ternopil Oblast. Most importantly, it has a 50-km long border with Romania to its south. This region is a mix of different landscapes. It includes parts of the Eastern European Plain and the Carpathian Foothills.

The land here changes quite a bit as you move around. You can divide the area into three parts: mountains, pre-mountains, and plains. The mountains take up almost half of the whole region.

These mountains rise from the north-east to the south-west. They follow the border of the region. Two main ranges make up these mountains. The Gorgany range includes Mt. Syvulia Major, which is 1,836 meters tall. The Chornohora range is home to Mt. Hoverla. This is the highest peak at 2,061 meters. The rest of the land has rolling hills and river valleys.

Water is a very important part of this land. The region has many rivers, waterfalls, and small brooks. However, there are almost no lakes or large reservoirs here. Most of the water flows into the Dniester River or the Prut River. These rivers help shape the land in special ways. For example, the Dniester flows along the border with Ternopil Oblast. In the south, you can find the Stanislav Canyon. This is a deep cut in the ground made by water. The region also has many small ponds and streams.

This region has a long and changing history. It was once part of a place called Galicia. After World War I, it became part of the Second Polish Republic. Later, it was taken by the Soviet Union. For a long time, the main city was called Stanislav. In 1962, the name changed to Ivano-Frankivsk. This change happened to honor a famous Ukrainian writer named Ivan Franko. The new name also marked the 300th anniversary of the city's founding. It was a way to celebrate both the city and the writer.

Nature is very well protected in this part of Ukraine. There are about 456 preserved areas in the oblast.

Many people live in the different cities and towns. Kolomyia is a major center for culture. The main city, Ivano-Frankivsk, is where the regional government is based. The area is divided into six main districts to help manage the land.
