You can see a white cross on a red background on its coat of arms. This symbol represents the Volhynian history of the land. The region is a very important part of the country.

The land changes depending on where you stand. The northern part lies in the Polesian Lowland. The southern part is part of the Volhynian Upland. There are hills called the Povcha Upland that reach over 350 meters.

Many large parts of the oblast are covered in woodlands. The Horyn river is the main water artery for the region. The Prypiat river also reaches the northwestern area. You might even find minerals like basalt or amber in the ground.

History has shaped this place many times. Before the Soviet Union took control during World War II, it was part of the Second Polish Republic. It was part of the Wołyń Voivodeship back then. Earlier, it was part of the Volhynian Governorate. In September 1939, the Soviet occupation of Poland divided the Volhynia region. This split the land between three different oblasts. These were Volyn, Rivne, and Ternopil. Some eastern parts also went to the Zhytomyr Oblast.

Many people live in this region. In 2013, the population was about 1,156,900 people. Most people there are ethnic Ukrainians, making up 95.9% of the population.
