It sits on the left bank of the Dnieper River. This region covers an area of 28,800 square kilometers. It shares borders with several other Ukrainian provinces, including Chernihiv, Sumy, and Kharkiv. The land is not very mountainous. Instead, the ground is gently undulating, which means it has soft, rolling hills. Most of the area was once part of the Cossack Hetmanate.

The history of this place is very old. Much of the territory used to be part of the Poltava Governorate. The modern province was officially established on 22 September 1937. It was created using parts of the Kharkiv and Kyiv provinces. During the years 1941 to 1943, Nazi Germany occupied most of the region. After the German forces left, the borders were set almost the same as before. In the 1950s, some land was lost when the Cherkasy Oblast was formed. Some areas even went under water when the Kremenchuk Reservoir was built in 1959.

Many people live and work in this province. The city of Poltava is the main administrative center. Other important cities include Kremenchuk, Lubny, and Horishni Plavni. In 2001, the population was about 1,400,000 people. Most of the people living here are ethnic Ukrainians. Ukrainian is the main language used by the people. In the 2023–2024 school year, all 134,575 pupils in secondary schools studied in Ukrainian classes. The region is also home to many different types of industries.

Work in Poltava Oblast involves many different tasks. It is a major center for finding oil and natural gas. Many wells and pipelines are located throughout the land. The city of Kremenchuk has a large oil refinery plant. There are also many facilities that process iron ore. Farming is also a huge part of life here. In 1999, farms produced many things like sugar beets, sunflowers, and potatoes. They also produced large amounts of meat, milk, and eggs.
