The main city is Kropyvnytskyi, which serves as the administrative center. Other large cities in the area include Oleksandriia, Znamianka, and Svitlovodsk. Interestingly, the city of Dobrovelychkivka is the exact geographical center of the whole country of Ukraine.

This land has a very long and busy history. The Scythians were among the first people to live here. Much later, during the Middle Ages, the Ulichis tribe lived on these lands. The Ukrainian Cossacks also played a huge role in this region. They built many villages across the territory. They even used special granite columns to mark their land.

Different groups ruled these lands at different times. From 1569, the area was part of the Kingdom of Poland. Later, the Cossacks of the Hetmanate and Zaporozhian Sich ruled here. By the end of the 18th century, the land came under Russian power. In 1752, a place called New Serbia was founded with its capital at Novomyrhorod. In the 1800s, the Skarżyński family owned much of the land. They helped the region grow by focusing on farming and opening schools.

The modern province was officially created on January 10, 1939. It was formed using parts of the Mykolaiv Oblast. During World War II, the area was under Nazi occupation from 1941 to 1944. It was later liberated during the Kirovograd offensive. For a long time, the main city was called Kirovohrad. This name was used from 1939 until 2016. Following new laws, the city changed its name back to Kropyvnytskyi. There are even plans to change the name of the whole oblast to Kropyvnytskyi Oblast.

Most people living here speak the Ukrainian language. In the 2001 census, about 89% of people said Ukrainian was their native tongue.
