The land lies to the west of the Ural Mountains. It shares borders with several other places, including Kirov, Perm, Bashkortostan, and Tatarstan. The capital city is Izhevsk, which serves as the main center for industry and culture. This city is not far from Moscow, the largest city in the Russian Federation. Izhevsk is easy to reach because it has many ways to travel by air, land, and water.

The name Udmurt has a very interesting meaning. It comes from roots that mean "meadow people." The first part of the name refers to greenery, such as meadows or grass. One old document from 1557 even uses this description for the people living there. Some experts believe the name might have links to very old languages from the Bronze Age. Others think the name could relate to words meaning "friend" or "boundary." These different ideas show how much history is hidden in a single name.

History tells us that the region has changed its name many times. It began as an autonomous region for the Udmurt people on November 4, 1920. In 1932, it became the Udmurt Autonomous Oblast. Later, in 1934, it was organized as the Udmurt ASSR. During World War II, the area became very busy as many factories moved there from western lands. Finally, on October 11, 1991, the name was officially changed to the Udmurt Republic. This long history shows how the land has grown and shifted over time.

Many different kinds of people call Udmurtia home. According to a 2021 Census, Russians make up 67.7% of the population. The ethnic Udmurt people make up 24.1% of the residents. Other groups include Tatars, who make up 5.5%, and Mari people, who make up 0.5%. People also follow many different faiths. About 33.1% of people belong to the Russian Orthodox Church. Others are Muslims, or follow the Udmurt native faith, or describe themselves as spiritual but not religious.

The climate in Udmurtia is known as a moderate continental climate. This means the seasons feel very different from one another. Summers are usually warm, which is a nice change from the rest of the year. However, the winters are cold and often covered in snow. The amount of rain and snow, called precipitation, averages between 400 and 600 mm every year. This cycle of weather helps shape the green meadows that give the Udmurt people their name.
