The city's story began with small settlements by the Karlutka River.

In 1760, workers started building a large dam. This dam was built to help run new ironworks. The dam created the Izhevsk Reservoir, which is a huge lake. It is one of the largest reservoirs in Europe. At first, the ironworks made iron bands. These bands were sent to Moscow to help rebuild the Kremlin. The city was originally called Izhevsky Zavod, which means "the factory on the Izh."

A big change happened in 1807. This is often called the second birth of the city. Emperor Paul I wanted a new arms factory built in the Urals. An engineer named Andrew Deryabin chose this site for the project. Construction on the new arms factory began on June 10, 1807. Many people moved here to find work at the factory. They used wood from nearby forests to build their homes. The population grew very fast during this time.

The city grew into a very organized place. An architect named Feodor Dudin created a master plan for the streets. He designed a grid of wide and straight roads. These streets crossed each other to make small rectangular blocks. After a big fire in 1810, the city followed this plan. People built houses using pinewood logs. Some houses were just one room, while others had two stories. By 1850, the settlement had grown to over 19,000 people.

Izhevsk remains a very important place for making things. It is famous for its work in engineering and metallurgy. Many different businesses grew there, including steel works and private armories. You can still see beautiful buildings from the past today.
