In 1760, workers began building a dam. This dam created a very large lake. We call this the Izhevsk Reservoir. It is one of the biggest in Europe. The city started as a place to make iron. It made iron bands for big buildings in Moscow.

In 1807, the city had a second birth. A new arms factory was built there. This factory made tools and weapons. Because of this, many people moved to the city. They built houses from wood found in nearby forests. The city grew into a place for many jobs. It is known as the Armory Capital of Russia. Today, it is a major center for industry and culture.
