It covers an area of 28,461 square kilometers. This region sits near the Black Sea and the Azov Sea. To the north, it meets Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. Mykolaiv Oblast is to the west, while Zaporizhzhia Oblast is to the east. The mighty Dnieper River runs through the middle of the land. This river splits the province into two distinct sides.

The city of Kherson is the main center for the region. It sits on the northern bank of the Dnieper. Many people call this area the "fruit basket" of Ukraine. This is because it grows so much food for the country. Most of this food is sent out during the summer months.

The land has seen many different groups rule it over time. Ancient Greeks and Scythians lived here long ago. Later, groups like the Byzantine Empire and the Mongol Empire held power. Other rulers included the Ottoman Empire, Poland, and Russia. In medieval times, towns like Oleshia were important trading ports. Another old town was Kazikermen, which is now called Beryslav.

The province we know today was established in 1944. In 1991, most people in the region voted for Ukraine to be independent. A survey in 2014 showed that most people did not want to join Russia. This history shows how many different cultures have shaped the land.

In recent years, the region has faced very difficult times. Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Russian forces took control of most of the province. In September 2022, Russia claimed to have taken the land through a disputed vote. However, most other countries did not recognize this claim. By mid-November 2022, Ukrainian forces retook the city of Kherson and the right bank of the river. The left bank of the Dnieper remains under Russian control. This conflict has changed the lives of everyone living there.

Life in the province is spread across many different towns. Kherson is the largest city with over 333,000 people. Other large cities include Nova Kakhovka, Kakhovka, Oleshky, and Henichesk.

Many people live in urban areas, but many others live in small villages. In 2012, the total population was about 1,083,367 people. The population is mostly made up of Ukrainians and Russians. Some people also belong to the Crimean Tatar group. There are also small numbers of Belarusians and others.

Natural changes have also affected the people in this region. In June 2023, the Kakhovka Dam was breached. This caused huge floods that moved downstream through the province. Many people had to leave their homes quickly to stay safe. The Kakhovka Reservoir was also drained by this event.

Even with these hard changes, the area remains a place of great importance. Its rivers, farms, and history connect it to the rest of the world. People continue to work to rebuild and live in this changing landscape.
