Some people also belong to the Crimean Tatar group. There are also small numbers of Belarusians and others.

Natural changes have also affected the people in this region. In June 2023, the Kakhovka Dam was breached. This caused huge floods that moved downstream through the province. Many people had to leave their homes quickly to stay safe. The Kakhovka Reservoir was also drained by this event.

The province was officially established in 1944 within Soviet Ukraine. During World War II, Germany occupied the area from 1941 to 1944. In 1991, a referendum was held regarding Ukrainian independence. In that vote, 90.13% of the people in Kherson Oblast supported the Declaration of Independence. A 2014 survey found that 90.9% of the population opposed joining Russia. This shows a strong historical connection to the Ukrainian state.

The region has faced extreme hardship due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This invasion began on February 24, 2022. Russian forces occupied most of the oblast during the early stages. In September 2022, Russia claimed to have annexed the oblast following a disputed referendum. Most states did not recognize this claim and called it illegal. The United Nations General Assembly demanded a complete Russian withdrawal. By mid-November 2022, Ukrainian forces retook the city of Kherson and the right bank of the Dnieper. However, the territory on the left bank remains under Russian control.

Human life in the oblast is concentrated in several key urban areas. Kherson is the largest city, with a population exceeding 100,000. Other significant cities include Nova Kakhovka, Kakhovka, Oleshky, and Henichesk. In 2012, the total population was 1,083,367 people. This represented about 2.4% of the total population of Ukraine. Most residents live in urban areas, which account for 61.5% of the population. The remaining 38.5% live in agricultural centers or villages. The population is diverse, with Ukrainians making up 82.0% and Russians making up 14.1%.

Natural disasters have also impacted the lives of those in the region. On June 6, 2023, the Kakhovka Dam was breached. This event caused extensive flooding downstream throughout the oblast. The breach also caused the Kakhovka Reservoir to drain. These floods forced many people to undergo mass evacuations to find safety.
