Luhansk is a place in far eastern Ukraine.

It sits in a part called Donbas.

The land has many different shapes and features. A large river called the Siversky Donets flows through the middle. It flows from west to east and splits the oblast in half. To the north, the land is part of the Starobilsk Plain. In the south, the ground rises into the Donetsk Ridge. The highest point in the whole region is Mohyla Mechetna.

This peak is part of that southern ridge.

History has changed this land many times. Long ago, the area was known as the Wild Fields. The province was officially created in 1938. It was called Voroshilovgrad Oblast for many years. It held that name from 1938 to 1958 and again later. In 1991, most people in the region voted for Ukraine to be independent.

This was a very important moment for the people living there.

Many people live in the cities of this province. About 87% of the population lives in urban areas. Most people there speak the Russian language. In 2001, about 68.8% of people were Russian speakers. The city of Luhansk is the main center for the region. Other big cities include Sievierodonetsk, Lysychansk, and Alchevsk.

The region is also known for its industry. It has many places that make machines and mine coal.

Lately, the region has seen much conflict and war. In 2014, fighting began between different groups in the Donbas. This led to many parts of the oblast being controlled by separatists. In 2022, a larger Russian invasion of Ukraine began. This caused very heavy fighting in many towns.

Since then, most of the land has come under Russian control. This has changed how the region is run and how people live.

The geography of the region is defined by several distinct landforms. A major river called the Siversky Donets flows through the oblast. It travels from west to east and divides the region into two main parts. The left bank of the river forms part of the Starobilsk Plain. To the north, the land transitions into the Central Russian Upland. The southern part of the oblast is more elevated. This area is known as the Donetsk Ridge. The highest point in the region is Mohyla Mechetna. This peak is located within the Donetsk Ridge.

History has shaped the identity of this territory over many centuries. Long ago, the area was part of a region called the Wild Fields. Later, it was part of various administrative units like Sloboda Ukraine and the Donets Governorate. The modern oblast was officially established in 1938. At that time, it was named Voroshilovgrad Oblast. It held this name until 1958, and again from 1970 to 1991. During the Second World War, the region saw intense military action. It was occupied by German forces in 1941. The area was liberated during the Soviet counter-offensive in the summer of 1943.

In December 1991, the people of the oblast participated in a national referendum. Approximately 83.86% of the voters supported the Declaration of Independence of Ukraine. Since then, the region has been part of an independent Ukraine. However, the political situation changed significantly in 2014. Pro-Russian separatists took control of large parts of the oblast. They declared the Luhansk People's Republic. This led to the war in Donbas. During this time, the official government functions moved to the city of Sievierodonetsk. Many universities also moved to cities like Starobilsk or Rubizhne to continue operating.

The region experienced further major changes during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russian ground forces entered the territory in February 2022. This caused intense and heavy fighting across the oblast. In mid-2022, significant battles occurred in the cities of Sieverodonetsk and Lysychansk.

By July 2022, Russian and allied troops controlled all cities in the oblast. In late September 2022, Russia declared the annexation of the entire oblast. This move is not recognized by Ukraine or the United Nations. The UN called the annexation an illegal attempt. By July 2025, Russian-backed officials stated that the entire region was under their control.

The population of Luhansk Oblast is diverse and mostly lives in cities. About 87% of the people live in urban areas. In 2001, ethnic Ukrainians made up 58.0% of the population. Native Russians accounted for 39.1% of the residents. The population is largely Russian-speaking. In the 2001 census, 68.8% of people identified as Russian speakers.

The southern part of the region is more heavily Russophone. The northern part is more agricultural and has more Ukrainian speakers. The city of Luhansk serves as the administrative center. Other major cities include Alchevsk, Lysychansk, and Sievierodonetsk. The oblast is the fifth most populous region in Ukraine.

The economy of the oblast is closely tied to the Donets Basin. The region is known for its extractive industries, especially coal mining. Various cities are centers for different types of mining. For example, Sverdlov and Rovenky are known for anthracite coal. The region also features significant machine building and metallurgy. The Luhanskteplovoz plant is a notable example of machine building. Sieverodonetsk is known for chemical and oil refining, such as the Azot association. These industries, along with agriculture, form the backbone of the local economy.
