The Donetsk International Airport became a major epicenter of combat for nearly a year. Currently, the city is occupied by Russia. It serves as the capital of the Donetsk People's Republic. The city has seen heavy shelling, which has caused civilian fatalities. The international community views the annexation of the region by Russia as a breach of international law.

Donetsk's history is marked by both industrial success and significant hardship. The region has faced many coal mine collapses. These accidents occurred from the 1990s through the 2010s. For example, the Zasyadko mine suffered disasters in 2007 and 2015. Hundreds of people have died in these mining incidents. Some officials suggest that linking pay to production led to ignored safety rules. Despite these challenges, the city was once recognized for its business development. In 2008, it was named the best city in the Commonwealth of Independent States for its development strategies.
