It serves as the administrative center of the Donetsk Oblast. The city is also the unofficial capital of the Donets Basin, or Donbas. This region is a large economic and cultural area. Donetsk is part of a massive urban sprawl. It sits adjacent to the major city of Makiivka. Together, these cities form a large conurbation.

The geography of Donetsk is defined by the steppe landscape. This means the land is mostly flat with scattered woodlands and hills. The city sits on the Kalmius River. This river connects the city to the Sea of Azov in the south.

There are five rivers flowing through the city. These include the Asmolivka, Cherepashkyna, Skomoroshka, and Bakhmutka. The city also contains two large reservoirs. One is the Nyzhnekalmius, which is 60 hectares. The other is the Donetsk Sea, which covers 206 hectares. A striking feature of the landscape is the 125 spoil tips. These are large piles of waste left over from mining operations.

Industry is the primary driver of the city's economy. Donetsk is a center for coal mining, steel production, and the chemical industry. This concentration of heavy industry requires a very skilled workforce. However, these industries also create a challenging ecological situation. The environmental impact of the factories affects the air and land. The city has also been a hub for science. In 1965, the Donetsk Academy of Sciences was established.

The history of the settlement began in 1779. It was first known as Aleksandrovka during the reign of Catherine the Great. A major turning point occurred in 1869. A Welsh businessman named John Hughes founded a steel plant and coal mines there.

The town was named Yuzivka or Hughesovka to honor him. The name "Yuz" is a Russian approximation of "Hughes." In its early years, many immigrants arrived from Wales. One area, the English Colony, still reflects this British origin in its architecture. The city grew into a major center and gained city status in 1917.

Donetsk has undergone many name changes over the decades. In 1924, the city was renamed Stalin. In 1929, the name changed again to Stalino. In 1961, the city was renamed Donetsk. This name comes from the Seversky Donets River. This change was part of a process called destalinization.

The city's population has fluctuated significantly due to war and industry. In 1939, the population was 507,000. After World War II, the population dropped to 175,000. The city was almost completely destroyed during the Nazi occupation. It was later rebuilt on a large scale. By 2011, the metropolitan area reached over 2 million people.

Since 2014, Donetsk has been a central site of the Russo-Ukrainian War. Pro-Russian separatist forces and Ukrainian military forces have fought for control of the area.

The Donetsk International Airport became a major epicenter of combat for nearly a year. Currently, the city is occupied by Russia. It serves as the capital of the Donetsk People's Republic. The city has seen heavy shelling, which has caused civilian fatalities. The international community views the annexation of the region by Russia as a breach of international law.

Donetsk's history is marked by both industrial success and significant hardship. The region has faced many coal mine collapses. These accidents occurred from the 1990s through the 2010s. For example, the Zasyadko mine suffered disasters in 2007 and 2015. Hundreds of people have died in these mining incidents. Some officials suggest that linking pay to production led to ignored safety rules. Despite these challenges, the city was once recognized for its business development. In 2008, it was named the best city in the Commonwealth of Independent States for its development strategies.
