It serves as the administrative center for the Kherson Oblast region. The city sits on the high bank of the Dnieper River. It is also situated near the Black Sea. This unique location makes it a vital hub for regional trade and transport. Kherson is a significant economic center for the area. It is particularly well known for its large-scale shipbuilding industry.

The city's economy relies on several interconnected industrial sectors. Large shipyards are central to its identity. These facilities build and repair vessels for maritime use. The Comintern Shipbuilding and Repairs Complex is one such major site. The Kuibyshev Ship Repair Complex also operates in the city. Additionally, the Kherson Cotton Textile Manufacturing Complex is a massive plant. It was one of the largest textile factories in the Soviet Union. The city's port also facilitates the large-scale export of grain. These industries have historically drawn many workers from the Ukrainian countryside.

Kherson has a complex history involving many different settlements. Before the city existed, a town called Bilechowisce was located there.

A map from 1648 shows this early settlement. In 1737, a Russian fort named St. Alexandre was built on the site. This fort served the Zaporizhian Sich as an administrative center. The territory was later annexed by the Russian Empire in 1774. On 18 June 1778, Empress Catherine the Great issued a decree to found Kherson. She intended the city to be a central fortress for the Black Sea Fleet.

The city grew rapidly as a center of maritime commerce. In 1783, a local shipyard opened to build hulls for the fleet. The Kherson Shipping Company also began its operations that same year. By the end of the 18th century, the port traded with several European nations. These included France, Italy, and Spain. Polish companies also used the port for maritime trade. They leased shoreline space for workshops, warehouses, and exchange offices. In 1803, the city reached a new milestone as the capital of the Kherson Governorate.

Demographic shifts have shaped the city over many centuries. In 1897, the population was 59,076 people. At that time, 47.2% of residents spoke Russian as their first language. The Jewish population was 29.1%, while Ukrainians made up 19.6%. By 1970, the population had grown significantly to 261,000 people. This growth changed the ethnic makeup of the city. The Ukrainian share rose from 36% in 1926 to 63% in 1959. However, the Jewish population decreased from 26% in 1926 to just 6% in 1959. This decline was a result of the Holocaust during World War II.

Kherson has faced many periods of conflict and occupation. During the Second World War, German forces occupied the city from 1941 to 1944. In September 1941, several thousand Jewish residents were killed near Zelenivka. The city also suffered during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russian forces occupied the city from March until November 2022.

In June 2023, part of the city experienced flooding. This occurred after the destruction of the nearby Kakhovka Dam.

Today, Kherson remains a vital part of the Ukrainian landscape. It is a center for science, culture, and industry. Despite historical hardships, many residents feel a strong connection to the city. A 2021 study found that over 80% of citizens consider it a good place to live. Most residents also expressed a strong attachment to their Ukrainian identity. The city continues to manage the challenges of modern reconstruction. It remains an essential administrative and economic link in southern Ukraine.
