According to a 2001 census, the city had a population of 240,600 people. It is widely recognized as a cultural, educational, and architectural hub in Western Ukraine.

The history of the area begins in the Neolithic era.

Archaeological evidence shows various ancient cultures lived here. These include the Cucuteni-Trypillian culture and the Corded Ware culture. Artifacts from the Bronze and Iron Ages have also been found. During the Middle Ages, East Slavic tribes like the White Croats and Tivertsi inhabited the region. A fortified settlement was later built on the north-eastern shore of the Prut River. This stronghold is thought to have been constructed by Grand Prince Yaroslav Osmomysl. However, the Mongol invasion led by Boroldai destroyed this fortress in 1259.

Following the destruction, new settlements grew on the south-western shore. This location was more elevated and strategically advantageous. In 1325, a fort named Țețina was mentioned near a crossing point on the Prut River. This fort was part of a defensive group including Hotin and a fort on the Kolachin River. Between 1359 and 1775, the city was part of the Principality of Moldavia. It served as the administrative center for a local county known as a ținut. The name Cernăuți first appeared in a document from 1408 by Alexandru cel Bun.

Later, the Ottoman Empire also exerted influence over the region.

Political control of Chernivtsi changed many times during the 18th and 19th centuries.

In 1774, Austria took control of Bukovina after the Russo-Turkish War. The city eventually became the capital of the Duchy of Bukovina. This was a crownland within the Austrian Empire. The city flourished after 1778 when Knight Karl von Enzenberg arrived. He invited merchants and craftsmen to develop local trade. The city also received Magdeburg rights, which are specific legal privileges for towns. During this era, German became the lingua franca, or common language, due to Habsburg and Jewish influences.

The early 20th century brought significant political shifts and conflicts.

After World War I, the West Ukrainian People's Republic was proclaimed in Lviv. In November 1918, a Ukrainian Bukovina Viche, or assembly, voted for reunification with that republic. However, the Romanian army took control of the city in late 1918. Romania annexed Bukovina, and the city was known as Cernăuți. By 1930, the city population reached 112,400. The population was very diverse. Ukrainians made up 44.5% of the residents. Romanians accounted for 25.5%, while Jews made up 16.7%. Germans and Poles also formed significant minority groups.

World War II caused further changes in sovereignty. The Soviet Union occupied the city from 1940 to 1941. Romania then recovered control of the city. The Soviet Union occupied the area again from 1944 until the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

After the Soviet Union dissolved, Chernivtsi became part of independent Ukraine. This long history of different rulers explains why the city has many names. It was known as Czernowitz under Austria and Chernovtsy under the Soviet Union.

These different names reflect the various ethnic and political identities that shaped the city.

Today, Chernivtsi is a highly connected regional hub.
