It serves as the administrative center for both the Rivne Oblast province and the Rivne Raion district. The city's location is vital for regional connectivity. It sits along a major route that links the cities of Kyiv and Volodymyr. This strategic position has shaped its development for many centuries. Today, Rivne functions as a major transportation and industrial hub within the country.

The history of Rivne began in the late 13th century. It was first mentioned in the Polish annals in 1283. During this time, it was an inhabited place in the Halych-Volhynia region. The city developed under the rule of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Poland. In 1481, a local princess named Maria built a castle on a river island.

This castle established the settlement as a princely residence. In 1492, Maria obtained Magdeburg Law for the settlement. Magdeburg Law is a system of rights that allowed cities to govern themselves. Following her death, the city passed to the noble Ostrogski and Lubomirski families.

Political control of Rivne shifted many times throughout history. The Russian Empire annexed the area in 1793. During the late 19th century, the city grew rapidly because of the railway. The expansion of rail links turned Rivne into a vital transportation hub. In 1919, the city served as the temporary capital for the Ukrainian People's Republic. Between the two World Wars, Rivne was part of the Polish Wolyn Voivodeship. In 1939, the Soviet Red Army occupied the city. This occupation led to the creation of the Rivne Oblast.

During the German occupation from 1941 to 1944, the city was the capital of Reichskommissariat Ukraine.

The Second World War brought extreme hardship to the city's population. Before the war, Rivne had a diverse population. Jews made up about 50% of the residents, while Poles made up 35%. During the German occupation, many Jewish inhabitants were killed. In November 1941, 17,500 Jewish adults were killed in a nearby pine grove in Sosenki. Additionally, 6,000 Jewish children were killed at a nearby site.

The Red Army captured the city on February 2, 1944. Since then, the city has maintained various administrative roles under Soviet and eventually independent Ukrainian rule.

Modern Rivne is a center for industry and education. During the Soviet era, the city was transformed into a major industrial center. Large factories were constructed to produce high-voltage apparatus and tractor spare parts. A chemical factory, known as Rivne-Azot, produces synthetic materials.

The city also hosts light industries like textile mills and linen plants. Food processing plants produce milk, meat, and preserved vegetables. Beyond industry, Rivne is a cultural center with many higher education institutions. Students attend colleges for medicine, music, agriculture, and automobile construction. The city also features a historical museum to preserve its complex past.

The physical environment of Rivne is characterized by a moderate continental climate. This means the city experiences cold, snowy winters and warm summers. Snow cover typically lasts from November through March. The weather patterns show that June and July are the wettest months. Conversely, January and February are the driest months of the year. The city's infrastructure includes the international Rivne Airport and various highways. These roads link the city to Brest, Kyiv, and Lviv. Rail links also connect Rivne to Zdolbuniv, Sarny, and Kovel.

Many memorials and landmarks define the landscape of Rivne. The city contains the Cathedral of the Intercession and the Church of the Assumption.

Various monuments honor different eras of history. A memorial complex at the Sosenki site commemorates the victims of the Holocaust. This site includes an obelisk with inscriptions in Yiddish, Hebrew, and Ukrainian. Other monuments honor soldiers who died in local battles or during the defense of Ukraine. The city's architecture also shows different styles, including neo-classical and Stalinist designs. Rivne remains a vital part of the Ukrainian social and economic system.
