It serves as the administrative center for both the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast and the Ivano-Frankivsk Raion. The city also hosts the administration for the Ivano-Frankivsk urban hromada. This position makes it a central hub for the surrounding area.

The geography of the city is defined by its proximity to the Carpathian Mountains. It sits in the Carpathian region, just northeast of the main mountain range. A prominent feature is Vovchynets Hill, also known as the Vovchynets Mountains. This hill is part of the Pokuttya Highland and reaches 300 meters above sea level.

The Bystrytsia River is a vital water feature in the area. It branches into three parts: the Bystrytsia of Nadvirna, the Bystrytsia of Solotvyn, and the Vorona. The latter two rivers act as a natural border between the Pokuttya Highland and the Stanislav Basin. To the southeast, the Khorosnen Highland sits in the direction of the Prut Valley. The highest point of that highland is Mount Hostra.

The climate of Ivano-Frankivsk follows a moderate continental pattern. This means the city experiences warm summers and fairly cold winters. Data from the last 62 years shows that precipitation occurs on about 170 days per year. Most of this precipitation falls during the winter months. The least amount of precipitation is recorded in early autumn. Summer months see an average of 25 thunderstorms annually.

Fog is a very frequent occurrence in the region. The city averages about 296 misty or foggy days each year. This averages out to roughly 24 misty days every month.

The history of the city began in the mid-17th century. It was founded as a fortress by the Polish Potocki family.

The town was originally named Stanisławów. It was named after the Polish hetman Stanisław "Rewera" Potocki. The fortress was built to protect the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from Tatar invasions. It also served to defend the multi-ethnic population during conflicts like the Khmelnytsky Uprising of 1648. The fort was originally made of wood. By 1672, it had been rebuilt using stone, brick, and mortar. A large fortified Potocki palace was also constructed during this time.

Throughout its history, the city has changed hands many times. In 1772, the First Partition of Poland led to the city being annexed by the Habsburg Empire. It then became part of the Austrian Empire and later Austria-Hungary. After World War I, the city briefly served as the temporary capital of the West Ukrainian People's Republic from January to May 1919.

Following the Peace of Riga in 1921, it became part of the Second Polish Republic. During World War II, the city was annexed by the Soviet Union in 1939. Two years later, it was occupied by Nazi Germany. After the liberation of Soviet Ukraine in 1944, the city remained part of the Ukrainian SSR. In 1962, the city was renamed Ivano-Frankivsk to honor the writer Ivan Franko.

After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, it became part of independent Ukraine.

The city's architecture reflects its diverse cultural history. You can see elements from many different eras and influences. These include the Polish city hall and Austro-Hungarian business centers.

On the rural-urban fringe, there are Soviet prefabricated apartment blocks. The city was once divided into several districts. These included the Tysmenytsia and Halych districts. Later, it was split into six smaller districts. These included a midtown area for the wealthy Catholic population and suburbs like Zabolotiv and Lysets where the plebeians lived.
