Its name, Zakarpattia, translates to "Transcarpathian" or "beyond the Carpathians." This name describes its location on the western side of the Carpathian Mountains. This major mountain range forms a large arc across Central and Southeast Europe. While much of the oblast sits within the mountains, the southwestern portion belongs to the Hungarian plain.

Because of its position, the region is also known by several other names. These include Subcarpathia, Transcarpathia, or Carpathian Ruthenia. The term "Subcarpathian" means "below the Carpathians." This refers to the area's location in the lower-elevation Carpathian Basin, also called the Pannonian Basin.

The geography of the region makes it a vital crossroads between many nations. Zakarpattia Oblast shares borders with four different countries: Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania.

The region was influenced by the Principality of Hungary starting in 895 AD. Later, it became part of the Kingdom of Hungary. By 1402, the area was organized into the Máramaros County. From 1867 until the end of World War I, it was part of the Hungarian side of Austria-Hungary. During this time, it consisted of four Hungarian counties: Bereg, Ung, Ugocsa, and Maramaros.

The region has seen many different governments claim control over its land.

Following World War I, the region experienced rapid political shifts. In 1920, the Treaty of Trianon made the territory part of Czechoslovakia. This period included a unique historical moment when the region had an American governor. Gregory Zhatkovich, an American citizen and representative of the Rusyn community, was appointed by the Czechoslovak president. In 1928, the area was officially named Subcarpathian Rus'. However, political instability continued. In 1938, following the Munich Agreement, the southern part of the region was awarded to Hungary. This left the remaining portion as an autonomous region of the Second Czechoslovak Republic.

World War II brought significant hardship and very brief political changes to the oblast. On March 15, 1939, Carpatho-Ukraine was proclaimed as an independent republic.

This state is often called the "one-day republic" because it lasted for less than twenty-four hours. It was immediately occupied and annexed by Hungary. This occupation was followed by a period of violence and military operations. Later, in October 1944, the Red Army occupied the region. Following this, the Soviet Union began the process of incorporating the territory. On 22 January 1946, Zakarpattia Oblast was officially established as part of the Ukrainian SSR.

Understanding Zakarpattia requires looking at how its people and its land connect. The region is home to the Rusyn people, an East Slavic ethnic group. The Rusyns speak the Rusyn language and have lived in the northeastern Carpathians since the Early Middle Ages. This heritage is reflected in the many historical names used for the region.
