geography Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast is a significant administrative region located in western Ukraine. It is often referred to by the name Prykarpattia, which means Prekarpathians. The region serves as a vital part of the country's western landscape. Its administrative center is the city of Ivano-Frankivsk. The oblast is surrounded by several other Ukrainian regions. It borders Lviv Oblast to the north and west. To the south-west, it meets Zakarpattia Oblast. It also shares borders with Chernivtsi Oblast and Ternopil Oblast. To the south, it maintains a 50-km long state border with Romania.

The physical geography of the oblast is quite diverse. It sits partly within the Eastern European Plain. It also extends into the Carpathian Foothills. You can divide the territory into three distinct zones. These are the mountainous regions, the pre-mountainous regions, and the plains. The mountains occupy nearly one half of the entire oblast.

The elevation in the region varies significantly. It ranges from a low of 230 meters to a high of 2,061 meters above sea level. This dramatic change in height shapes the local climate and environment.

The mountains are formed by the Carpathian fold belt tectonic plate. This plate creates the prominent Carpathian Mountains in the region. These mountains rise from the north-east toward the south-west. They stretch along the south-western border of the oblast. There are two primary mountain ranges here. The Gorgany range is one major part. Its highest point is Mt. Syvulia Major at 1,836 meters. The other major range is the Chornohora. This range contains Mt. Hoverla, which is the highest peak at 2,061 meters.

Outside of the mountains, the land features river valleys and rolling hills. The region sits near the Volhynia-Podillya plate. This plate is associated with the Dniester River. Much of the remaining land lies within the Dniester and Prut river valleys. The plains consist of the Carpathian Foothills and the Opillia Upland. This upland features a forest steppe habitat. This is a mix of grassland and woodland under a temperate climate. The relief often includes hills between 230 and 400 meters. You may also see canyons and ravines near the river valleys.

Water plays a massive role in the shape of this land. The oblast has many rivers, waterfalls, and mountainous brooks. However, it lacks large lakes or water reservoirs. Most water flows into the Dniester or the Prut River. The Prut is a tributary of the Danube. The Dniester flows through the Halych Raion. It also forms part of the border with Ternopil Oblast. In the south, the Stanislav Canyon is a notable feature. This deep canyon was created by episodic water flowing into the Baltic.

The history of the region is marked by many changes. It was once part of the historical region of Galicia. This area flourished under the Kingdom of Galicia–Volhynia. After World War I, it became part of the Second Polish Republic. It was part of the Stanisławów Voivodeship then. Later, the Soviet Union annexed the territory. It was known as Stanislav Oblast for many years. In 1962, the name changed. A decree from the Presidium of the Verkhovna Rada renamed it. This change honored the famous Ukrainian writer Ivan Franko. It also coincided with the 300th anniversary of the city's founding.

Nature is highly protected throughout the oblast. There are approximately 456 preserved areas as of June 2006. About 30 of these are of all-national importance. The region contains five national parks. One notable area is the Gorgany strict nature reserve, created in 1996. The climate is mildly-continental and often damp. Summers are cool and winters are mild. The government manages the region through a state administration. This administration is led by a governor appointed by the President of Ukraine. The region is currently divided into six main districts or raions.
