The physical landscape of the oblast is primarily a plain. This plain gently slopes toward the south. Much of the territory sits within the Black Sea Lowland. In the northern areas, you will find the spurs of the Podolian and Dnieper uplands. The region contains eighty-five rivers that flow into the Black Sea basin. The Southern Bug river is a major waterway. It is significant because it splits the oblast into eastern and western sections. Other important rivers include the Inhulets and the Berezan. The geography also includes the Kinburn Peninsula, Berezan Island, and Pervomaisky Island in the Dnieper Estuary.

The climate in Mykolaiv Oblast is described as moderately continental. This means the weather follows distinct seasonal patterns. Winters are generally mild and see only small amounts of snow. Conversely, the summers are often hot and arid. This environment supports various natural features and mineral deposits. The ground contains valuable resources like nickel and uranium ores. It also holds granite, gneiss, and quartzites. These natural elements shape the local economy and the physical environment.

The history of this territory is incredibly complex. Many different groups have ruled the land at various times. These include the Scythians and ancient Greeks. Other historical powers include the Mongol Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The ancient Greek colony of Olbia was once a site of great importance.
