Odesa Oblast is a major province in southwestern Ukraine.

It sits along the northern coast of the Black Sea. The region is part of the Black Sea Lowland. This area is characterized by large, flat steppes. The Dniester river estuary cuts through the landscape. To the south, the Danube river forms a border. The coastline features many sandy beaches, lagoons, and estuaries.

The geography of the region supports a very strong economy. The soil is famous for being extremely fertile. This is especially true for the chernozems, or black soils. Because of this, intensive agriculture is the main part of the rural economy. Farmers grow wheat, maize, barley, sunflowers, and sugar beets.

The region is also the largest wine-growing area in Ukraine. It contains over 100,000 hectares of vineyards. This makes viticulture a significant branch of local industry.

Odesa Oblast is also a vital hub for transportation and industry. The region contains eight different seaports. These ports are essential for moving goods and oil through pipelines. Much of the industrial activity is concentrated near the city of Odesa. This city serves as the administrative center for the entire oblast. Transportation also relies heavily on a network of railways. Oil refining and chemical processing are other important economic sectors.

The history of this land spans thousands of years. Evidence of early inhabitants comes from the Neolithic Gumelnița and Cucuteni-Trypillia cultures. During the first millennium B.C., Milesian Greeks founded colonies. These included the towns of Tyras and Niconium.

The Greeks left behind ceramics, sculptures, and inscriptions. Later, Scythian tribes lived in the nearby steppes. They left behind weapons, bronze cauldrons, and various adornments. Eventually, the Sarmatians displaced the Scythians in the first millennium A.D.

Many different powers have controlled the region over time. The Mongols took control of the Black Sea coast in the 13th century. By 1290, parts of the area belonged to the Republic of Genoa. This made the region a center for Genoese commerce. Later, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania acquired the area in the 15th century. The Ottoman Empire established the Dnieper Province here in 1593. Eventually, most of the territory passed to Russian control in 1791. In the 20th century, the area became part of the Ukrainian SSR.

The population of the oblast is diverse and complex. As of early 2021, there were 2,368,107 people living there. Nearly 43% of these residents live in the city of Odesa. Ethnic Ukrainians are the largest group at 62.8%. Russians make up 20.7% of the population. There are also significant Bulgarian and Moldovan minorities.

There are many notable sites to visit within the oblast. The historic center of Odesa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The region is also known for its large lakes. Yalpuh Lake is one of the five biggest lakes in Ukraine. These landmarks help connect the modern region to its long history.

Today, Odesa Oblast remains a central part of Ukraine. In 1991, 85.38% of voters in the oblast supported Ukrainian independence. During the 2022 Ukraine Recovery Conference, nations pledged to help rebuild the region. The area continues to face challenges, such as an earthquake in May 2025. Despite these events, the province remains a key part of the nation's geography and economy.
