However, political instability continued. In 1938, following the Munich Agreement, the southern part of the region was awarded to Hungary. This left the remaining portion as an autonomous region of the Second Czechoslovak Republic.
World War II brought significant hardship and very brief political changes to the oblast. On March 15, 1939, Carpatho-Ukraine was proclaimed as an independent republic.
This state is often called the "one-day republic" because it lasted for less than twenty-four hours. It was immediately occupied and annexed by Hungary. This occupation was followed by a period of violence and military operations. Later, in October 1944, the Red Army occupied the region. Following this, the Soviet Union began the process of incorporating the territory. On 22 January 1946, Zakarpattia Oblast was officially established as part of the Ukrainian SSR.
The population of the oblast is diverse, consisting of many different nationalities. According to the 2001 Ukrainian Census, the population was 1,254,614 people.
