Many different groups have lived and ruled here over the years. This makes the region a very special place to study.

The land here is very varied and changes as you travel. In the south, you will find the Beskids mountain chains. These mountains run from the northwest to the southeast. The highest point in the region is called Pikui.

Moving north, you will see wide river valleys. The Dniester and San rivers flow through these flat areas. These valleys can sometimes flood when there is heavy rain.

Between the mountains and the rivers, there are many forests and hills.

History tells us that Lviv was founded in the 13th century. A king named Daniel of Galicia started the city. He named the city after his son, Leo.

Today, the region has a very distinct culture. Most people living here are ethnic Ukrainians. According to a 2001 census, they made up 94.8% of the people.
