Today, this land is split between southeastern Poland and western Ukraine. Much of the heart of Galicia sits in the Lviv, Ternopil, and Ivano-Frankivsk areas of Ukraine. Some parts also belong to Polish regions like Lesser Poland and Subcarpathian. The name comes from a medieval city called Halych.

Some people think the name might mean a naked hill. Others believe it comes from a word for a jackdaw bird.

This fighting was very hard for the people living in the area. After the war, the borders changed again. Part of the land became part of the Republic of Poland. Other parts were part of the West Ukrainian People's Republic. These changes led to more tension between different groups of people.

Galicia is a place where many different paths meet. It links the history of many great empires together. You can see this history in the many names of its cities. For example, Volodymyr and Jaroslaw were named after famous princes.
