Lviv has been a center for trade and many different groups of people. In the 1400s, it sat on important merchant paths. These paths connected Central Europe to the Black Sea region. Many people from different places lived there, including Armenians, Germans, and Italians. By the 1600s, it was the second largest city in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It had about 30,000 people living in it then.

The city is famous for its beautiful and old look. The historic center has many bumpy cobblestone streets. You can see many different styles of buildings there. These include Renaissance, Baroque, and Art Nouveau styles.

Because these buildings are so special, the center is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Today, the site is considered endangered because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
