It is the 18th largest province in the country. The area covers about 3.5% of Ukraine's total land. This region sits right along the Dnieper River. The river flows from the south toward the north. It divides the land into two very different parts. The western side is hilly and known as the Dnieper Upland. The eastern side is a flat, low-lying plain.

Nature and water have changed here over time. In the past, the Dnieper River flooded the eastern plains often. This happened because the river level would rise unexpectedly. In the 20th century, people built many dams along the river. These dams are part of hydroelectric power plants. They help control the flow of the water. This makes the low lands much safer for people to live on. Today, the river stays within its banks more steadily.

History is hidden deep within this landscape. People have lived in the Dnieper River valley for a very long time. Archaeologists have found objects from the Stone Age here. This means humans lived in this area during the Palaeolithic period. The modern province was officially created in 1954. It was formed as part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. The new borders brought together many different cities and districts. This helped create the province we recognize today.

Many people call this region home. As of 2006, the population was about 1,335,064 people. The population is split almost evenly between cities and the countryside. Most people live in urban areas, while others live in rural areas.

There are many interesting places to visit and learn. The city of Cherkasy is the main center for the province.
