A major river called the Desna flows through the middle. This river splits the province into northern and southern sections. The Desna eventually flows into the Dnieper River near Kyiv.

The region is known for its many historical sites and old buildings. For a long time, it was part of the Kievan Rus'. During that era, the city of Chernihiv was a major capital. In fact, it was the second most important city in Ukraine then. Many different groups have ruled this land over the years. These include the Mongol Empire, Lithuania, Poland, and Russia. You can still see this history in beautiful Orthodox churches.

Some famous spots include the Saviour-Transfiguration Cathedral and the Boris and Gleb Cathedral. The city of Chernihiv has had people living there for over 2,000 years.

Life in the province involves many different kinds of work. Many people work in industries like machinery and electronics. There are also jobs in textile making and tobacco production. A large tobacco factory is located in the city of Pryluky.

In some northern villages near the borders, Russian is more common. However, Ukrainian is the only official language in the whole province. Most students now study in Ukrainian language classes. In the 2023-2024 school year, all 89,872 secondary pupils studied in Ukrainian. The population is around 976,701 people as of 2021. This number has been falling over a long time.

Chernihiv Oblast has faced many difficult times in its history. During World War II, Germany occupied the province from 1941 to 1943. More recently, it was one of the first places where fighting happened in 2022. Russian and Ukrainian forces clashed in the region during that invasion. The governor stated that mines were left in many areas after the military left. Even after the fighting moved, the border areas have faced shelling. The province also deals with many unmanned aerial vehicles in the sky. Despite these hard times, the region remains a very important part of Ukraine.
