It is also known by the name Zhytomyrshchyna. The main city and administrative center is Zhytomyr. This region sits within a large area that includes historic lands like Polesia, Volhynia, and Podolia. These different areas are even shown on the province's coat of arms. It is a place with a rich and varied landscape. Many people find the history of these lands very interesting.

There are many special places to visit in this province. You can find the Museum of Ukrainian home icons in the small town of Radomyshl. This museum is quite unique because it is the only one of its kind in Europe. It is part of the Radomysl Castle historical and cultural complex. Another famous site is the Church of Saint Basil the Great in Ovruch. The area also has a stone village state preserve. Some of these sites were even nominated for the Seven Wonders of Ukraine.

History has shaped this land in many different ways over the centuries. Before the 18th century, the region was split between different territories. Parts belonged to the Kyiv Voivodeship, while others were part of the Volyn Voivodeship. Later, the Russian Empire held much of this territory. The modern province was officially created on September 22, 1937. It was formed from parts of the Vinnytsia and Kyiv oblasts. More recently, the region faced a hard time during the 2022 Russian invasion. Russian troops occupied parts of the area but were pushed out by April 4, 2022.

People live and work in many different ways throughout the oblast. The economy relies on forestry, agriculture, and making various machines. Many people also work in mining to find construction stone. One famous type of stone is called Volga Blue Granite.

In 2013, the population was about 1,268,903 people. Most of the people living here are ethnically Ukrainian. Ukrainian is the official language used in all parts of the province. In the 2023–2024 school year, all 133,037 pupils studied in Ukrainian classes.

Life in the province also reflects the geography of the land. The northern part of the province was affected by the Chernobyl disaster. Because of this, some towns are in a special zone. In these areas, people are not allowed to grow certain crops. The province is divided into four main districts called raions. These are Berdychiv Raion, Korosten Raion, Zhytomyr Raion, and Zviahel Raion. Each district helps organize the many towns and villages.
