It surrounds the city of Kyiv, but the city is not part of the oblast itself. Kyiv acts as the administrative center for the whole region. Much of the area depends on the city for its economy and transport. The region is quite big, about 35 times the size of Kyiv city.

Nature is everywhere in this part of the world. The land is very green and covered by a thick belt of forests. You can find 250 different kinds of trees and bushes growing there. These include 13 large reservoirs, 2,000 ponds, and about 750 small lakes. The weather is moderately continental with mild winters and warm summers.

This land has a very long and changing history. It was once part of the Ruthenian land. Later, it was part of the Kiev Voivodeship and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 1932, it became an official oblast of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. The region is also known for a special style of folk icon painting. These paintings often show saints with dark clothes and colorful haloes. Some of these beautiful items are kept at the Radomysl Castle.

Many people live in this province, with about 1.72 million people.

The largest city in the oblast is Bila Tserkva, which has over 200,000 residents. Most people here are ethnic Ukrainians, making up 92.5% of the population. Ukrainian is the official language used in schools and public life. In the 2023–2024 school year, all 237,624 pupils studied in Ukrainian classes. The population is split between people living in towns and those in rural areas.

There are some very important and serious places to know about. In the north, there is the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. This area is managed separately, and people are not allowed to enter it. The borders of the oblast also changed after the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. More recently, the region saw conflict during the Russian invasion in 2022. Ukrainian troops worked to retake many towns and villages during that time. Today, the oblast remains a vital part of Ukraine's heartland.
