The province is the 18th largest oblast in Ukraine. It covers about 3.5% of the country's total area. The administrative center is the city of Cherkasy. This city serves as the main hub for the region.

The geography of the oblast is defined by the Dnieper River. The river divides the territory into two unequal sections. The western bank is hilly and belongs to the Dnieper Upland. The eastern bank is a low-lying plain.

In the past, the eastern plains suffered from frequent flooding. This changed during the 20th century. Engineers built multiple dams for hydroelectric power plants. These plants control the river's flow. This control prevents the frequent flooding that once occurred.

Human history in this region stretches back to the Stone Age. Archaeologists have found objects from the Palaeolithic period here. This shows people inhabited the Dnieper valley for a very long time. The modern province was officially created on January 7, 1954. It was established by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet. This formation included the cities of Cherkasy, Smila, and Uman. It also combined 30 former districts from neighboring provinces. These districts came from Vinnytsia, Kyiv, Kirovohrad, and Poltava.

The population of the oblast is roughly 1,335,064 people as of 2006. The people are divided almost equally between urban and rural areas. According to the 2001 census, 53.7% live in cities and 46.3% live in the countryside. The population is also aging. Ethnic Ukrainians make up 93.1% of the residents. Ethnic Russians account for 5.4% of the population.

Most residents use Ukrainian as their native language.

Language use has changed over several decades. During the Soviet era, many people experienced Russification. This process increased the share of Russian speakers. However, since Ukraine gained independence in 1991, the education system has undergone Ukrainization. In the 2023–2024 school year, all 114,960 secondary students studied in Ukrainian. This is a major shift from previous years. For example, in 1991, only 75.8% of pupils studied in Ukrainian. By 2023, that number reached 100%.

The economy relies heavily on agriculture. Farmers grow winter wheat and sugar beets as primary products. They also produce barley, corn, tobacco, and hemp. Cattle breeding is another vital part of the local economy. Industry is mostly concentrated in the capital, Cherkasy. This city has a developed chemical industry. It also features machine building, furniture making, and agricultural processing. The region is divided into four large districts called raions. These include Cherkasy, Uman, Zolotonosha, and Zvenyhorodka.
