This city is a very important port. A port is a place where ships dock. Many ships come here to help Yemen. They bring food and other goods. About 70% of the things Yemen buys come through this port. People also send things out from here. They export coffee, cotton, dates, and hides.

In the past, Hodeidah was a center for making things. People made striped cotton cloth by hand. They also made sandals and worked with leather. Long ago, the city was known for fine coffee.

The weather is very hot. It has a desert climate. There are many islands in the sea near the coast. Some of these are the Kamaran and Hanish Islands. The city has also seen much change over time. A big fire in 1961 destroyed much of the city. People rebuilt it with help from the Soviet Union. Now, the port remains a vital place for the country.
