The Houthis are part of the Zaidi Shia group. They felt the government did not treat their community fairly. They also wanted better jobs and fair fuel prices for all people. The government accused the Houthis of trying to take over the country.

Fighting happened in many stages over several years. In 2004, many people died in the first battles. Hussein al-Houthi was killed by government forces. His brother, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, then led the group.

By 2009, the fighting grew much larger. It spread to the border of Saudi Arabia. This made the conflict a bigger problem for other countries too. In late 2014, the Houthis took over the capital city, Sanaa. This turned the rebellion into a full civil war.
