Before his presidency, he held several high-ranking roles. He was the second vice president of Yemen from 1994 to 2012. He also served as a field marshal for the Yemeni Armed Forces. His life has been defined by the political shifts in Yemen. He helped lead the country through a period of great transition. This period involved moving from one form of government to another.
Hadi's career began in the military during the mid-20th century. He was born on September 1, 1945, in Thukain, Abyan.
He graduated from a military academy in the Federation of South Arabia in 1966. Later, he studied armored warfare in Egypt in 1970. He also spent four years in the Soviet Union studying military leadership. These experiences helped him rise to the rank of Major General. In 1986, he fled to North Yemen after a civil war in the south. He later joined President Ali Abdullah Saleh during the 1994 civil war. In that conflict, Hadi served as the Minister of Defense.
After the 1994 war, Hadi moved into high-level politics. He was appointed vice president on October 3, 1994. He replaced Ali Salim Al-Beidh, who had resigned. In 2011, a major uprising occurred in Yemen. During this time, President Saleh underwent medical treatment in Saudi Arabia. From June 4 to September 23, 2011, Hadi served as the Acting President. Later, on November 23, he became Acting President again. This happened after Saleh moved into a non-active role. Saleh was granted immunity from prosecution during this transition.
Hadi officially became the president through a unique election process. On February 21, 2012, he was the sole consensus candidate.
