history Maturity 5-7 Next article →

For a long time, two separate lands lived side by side. The North was called the Yemen Arab Republic. The South was called the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen.

They had different ways of life. The North had a king long ago. Later, it became a republic. The South was once ruled by the British. In the 1970s, the two sides fought a short war. They also fought again in 1979.

Things began to change in the late 1980s. Leaders found oil near the border. This gave them a reason to work together. In 1989, two leaders signed a unity plan. Their names were Ali Abdullah Saleh and Ali Salem al-Beidh.

On May 22, 1990, they became one country. They called it the Republic of Yemen.

Sanaa became the capital city.

But staying together was hard. In 1994, a civil war broke out. This was a sad time of fighting.

After the war, the North held more power. Many people in the South still want to be separate today.
