The Houthi insurgency is a long conflict in the country of Yemen. It began as a rebellion by a group called the Houthis. They are part of the Zaidi Shia religious community. For a long time, this group felt ignored by the government. They wanted better jobs and fair fuel prices for everyone. They also wanted the government to be more accountable. This struggle has since grown into a much larger civil war.

The fighting started because of a disagreement with the government. In 2004, the government tried to arrest a leader named Hussein al-Houthi. He was a religious leader and a former member of parliament. The government even put a $55,000 bounty on his head. This event sparked the first phase of the wars. After Hussein was killed by government forces, his brother Abdul-Malik al-Houthi took over. His father, Badreddin al-Houthi, became the spiritual leader of the group.

Over the years, the conflict went through many different stages. In 2005, more fighting broke out between the two sides. The government estimated that the insurgency caused over $270 million in economic damage. By 2007, the fighting became even more intense. During that year, about 1,500 people were killed in the conflict. This included government troops, rebels, and civilians. A ceasefire was reached in June of that year. The rebel leaders even agreed to go into exile in Qatar.

As time passed, the war moved into new areas. In 2009, the government launched a major offensive called Operation Scorched Earth. This used tanks and aircraft to fight the rebels in Saada. The fighting also reached the border of Saudi Arabia. In November 2009, the Houthis entered Saudi territory and took control of some villages. This made the conflict an international issue. Saudi Arabia responded with its own air strikes to protect its borders. Many people had to leave their homes because of these battles.

The scale of the war changed greatly in 2014. That year, the Houthis took control of the capital city, Sanaa. This changed the rebellion into a full-scale civil war. In March 2015, a large group led by Saudi Arabia joined the fight. The conflict has affected many parts of northern Yemen. It has touched places like Hajjah, 'Amran, and al-Jawf. Today, the history of these wars shows how local disagreements can grow into much bigger struggles.
