The group's story began in the year 2002. A man named Mohammed Yusuf started the movement. He led his followers to oppose Western ways of learning. In 2009, the Nigerian government began to investigate the group. This led to very violent clashes in several cities. These cities included Bauchi, Maiduguri, Potiskum, and Wudil. During these fights, about 700 people died. Mohammed Yusuf was killed by the government during this time.

After Yusuf died, Abubakar Shekau became the leader. He led the group through many years of fighting. The group used many different tactics to fight the government. They even used bows with poison arrows and motorcycles. By 2014, the group became much more aggressive. They took over large areas in northeastern Nigeria. In that year alone, 10,849 people died from the violence. The conflict even spread to Cameroon, Chad, Mali, and Niger.

In 2015, the group split into two different parts. One part joined with the Islamic State. They became known as the Islamic State's West Africa Province, or ISWAP. The other part stayed as Boko Haram under Shekau. These two groups often fought each other. They also fought the local governments. In May 2021, ISWAP attacked Boko Haram in the Sambisa Forest. This fight led to the death of Shekau. Later, in August 2021, the leader of ISWAP named Abu Musab al-Barnawi was also killed.

Many people have tried to find peace. The government once offered an amnesty to the fighters. An amnesty is a way to forgive people for their actions. However, the group rejected this offer. Since the leaders died, many fighters have chosen to surrender. On April 5, 2022, over 51,114 people surrendered. This group included 11,398 men, 15,381 women, and 24,335 children. By July 2023, that number grew to over 100,000 people.
