He was born in Medina on January 11, 626. His father was Ali and his mother was Fatima. Both of them were part of the Banu Hashim clan. Husayn was the grandson of the prophet Muhammad. Because of this family connection, many people call his family the Ahl al-Bayt.

This means the "People of the Household." Muhammad once put Husayn, his brother Hasan, Ali, and Fatima under a cloak. He said they were pure and free from sin.

His life was full of big changes for his people. When his father Ali was leader, Husayn went with him on military trips. After Ali died, Husayn's brother Hasan became a leader too. Hasan made a peace treaty with a man named Mu'awiya I. This treaty said Mu'awiya would not pick his own successor. Husayn followed this treaty to keep the peace. He even stayed away from politics for many years. He lived in Medina with Hasan to avoid fighting.

Things changed when Mu'awiya I died in 680. Instead of letting the community choose, Mu'awiya's son Yazid became the new leader. This went against the old peace treaty. Yazid wanted Husayn to pledge his support to him. Husayn refused to do this. He left his home in Medina and went to Mecca. While he was there, people from a city called Kufa sent him letters. They asked him to come and be their leader.

Husayn began a journey toward Kufa with about 72 men.

On October 2, his group stopped in a place called Karbala. Soon, a very large army arrived there. Some reports say there were 4,000 soldiers, while others say there were 30,000. Negotiations between the two sides did not work. The governor, Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad, would not let Husayn pass safely. A battle happened on October 10, 680. Husayn and most of his followers were killed in the fight.
