Ali ibn Abi Talib was a central figure in early Islamic history. He was the cousin and son-in-law of the prophet Muhammad.

Ali was born in Mecca around 600 CE. Some believe he may have been born inside the Ka'ba. This is the holiest site in Islam. His father was Abu Talib, a leader in the Quraysh tribe. When Ali was five, he moved into Muhammad's home. He became one of the first people to accept Islam.

Ali served many roles during the life of Muhammad. He acted as a secretary and a deputy. He was also a scribe who helped write the Quran.

In 622, Ali showed great bravery during the hijra. This was the migration from Mecca to Medina. He stayed behind as a decoy to protect Muhammad. Later, Muhammad married his daughter Fatima to Ali. This created a very close bond between them. Ali also served as a flag-bearer in many battles. He was known for his courage and his skill with a sword named Zulfiqar.

After Muhammad died in 632, the Muslim community faced big questions. A group of people met at the Saqifa to choose a leader. They chose Abu Bakr, who was the first caliph.

Ali did not take leadership at that time. He lived a quiet life during the reigns of Abu Bakr and Umar. He also lived through the time of the third caliph, Uthman. Ali sometimes gave advice to these leaders. However, he also disagreed with some of their ways. These disagreements were part of the early history of the faith.

In 656, Ali was elected as the fourth caliph. His rule was a very difficult time for the community.

He had to deal with several rebellions. One was the Battle of the Camel in 656. Another was the Battle of Siffin in 657 against Mu'awiya. A group called the Kharijites also fought against him. Ali eventually defeated them at the Battle of Nahrawan in 658. Sadly, Ali was assassinated in 661 by a Kharijite named Ibn Muljam. This event led to the start of the Umayyad Caliphate.

Today, Ali is remembered in many different ways.

Sunni Muslims see him as the last of the rightly-guided caliphs. Shia Muslims hold him in very high regard. They believe he was the first Imam and the rightful successor. For Shia Muslims, Ali is second only to Muhammad. Many people go on a special journey to visit his shrine in Najaf, Iraq.

His famous sayings are collected in a book called Nahj al-balagha. People still study his life to learn about courage and honesty.
