He grew up there and even held a small job under the leader Ali. This city would later become the center of his movement. He was a man who wanted to change how people were treated.

Mukhtar's main goal was to seek justice for the family of Muhammad. Long ago, in 680, a man named Husayn was killed in the Battle of Karbala. Husayn was the grandson of the prophet Muhammad. This event made many people very sad and angry. Mukhtar wanted to find those who were responsible for the killing. He also wanted to support Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya. Mukhtar called him the Mahdi to show he was a special leader.

To start his revolt, Mukhtar had to take control of Kufa. In October 685, he and his followers fought against the local governor. They used fires to signal that it was time to fight. After a short battle, they won and took over the city. Mukhtar then ruled most of Iraq for eighteen months.

He promised to protect the weak and fight against sinners. His followers believed he was working to make things right.

One very important thing Mukhtar did was help the mawali. The mawali were people who were not Arabs but had joined Islam. Before Mukhtar, these people were often treated as lower-grade citizens. Mukhtar changed this by giving them equal rights. He allowed them to receive army salaries and war booty. He even said that any mawali slaves who joined him would be set free. This helped him gain many new and loyal followers.

Mukhtar's time as a ruler ended in a hard way. A leader named Mus'ab ibn al-Zubayr led an army against him. Mukhtar was trapped in a siege that lasted for four months. After he died, his movement still had a big impact. His followers started a group called the Kaysanites. This group helped lead the Abbasid Revolution sixty years later.
