Long ago, a man named Husayn was killed in a battle. Husayn was the grandson of the prophet Muhammad. Mukhtar wanted to get justice for Husayn. He went to Kufa to start a revolt. In 685, he took control of the city. He ruled most of Iraq for eighteen months.

Mukhtar helped many people. He supported the mawali. These were people who were not Arabs. Before, they were treated as lower-grade citizens. Mukhtar gave them more rights. He said they could receive army pay. He also said slaves who joined him could be free. This helped him gain many followers.

His rule did not last long. A leader named Mus'ab ibn al-Zubayr fought him. Mukhtar died after a four-month siege. Even after he died, his ideas lived on. His followers formed a group called the Kaysanites. They helped lead a big change sixty years later.
