It was ruled by Arab families. Many people in the empire felt unhappy. They felt the Umayyads were not fair.

Non-Arab Muslims were often treated poorly. They could not hold high jobs. They could not join the military as officers. Even after they became Muslim, they were treated as second-class. Non-Muslims also felt the rules were too hard.

A new group began to lead a change. They were the Abbasids. They were a ruling family from the House of the Prophet.

They worked in secret for many years. They built a strong group in a place called Khorasan.

A leader named Abu Muslim helped organize the movement. He worked to bring many different people together. They wanted to replace the Umayyads. By the year 750, the Abbasid revolution succeeded. The Abbasids became the new rulers of the empire.
