The Abbasid revolution was a major change in Islamic history. It was a movement that overthrew the Umayyad Caliphate. The Umayyads were the second major caliphate, ruling from 661 to 750. After they were defeated, the Abbasid Caliphate took over. This new group ruled from 750 until 1517.

This shift changed how the empire worked and who held power. It was not just a simple change of leaders. It was a huge movement that brought many different people together.

Many different groups of people wanted the Umayyads to leave. First, non-Arab Muslims felt they were treated unfairly. These people were often called mawali. Even after they became Muslim, they could not hold high jobs. They could not be officers in the military. They also had to pay a special tax called the jizya.

This made them feel like second-class citizens. Because of this, they joined the revolution to seek equality.

Other groups also felt unhappy with Umayyad rule. Some Shia Muslims were upset by past events. They remembered the death of Husayn ibn Ali in 680. This event became a way to rally people against the Umayyads. Even non-Muslims felt the Umayyad laws were too hard. In 741, a law said non-Muslims could not work in government.

This meant many people from different faiths joined the Abbasids. They all wanted a fairer way to live.

The Abbasid family started their plan in secret. They were descendants of al-Abbas, an uncle of the prophet Muhammad. They did not tell everyone their true names at first. They simply said they wanted a leader from the Prophet's family. This helped them gain support from many different people.

They used secret networks to build their strength. This helped them prepare while the Umayyad empire was struggling with many problems.

A leader named Abu Muslim helped organize the uprising. He worked in the eastern province called Khorasan. In Khorasan, Arab settlers lived closely with local Iranian people. This made the region a great place to build support. Abu Muslim assumed leadership of the Hashimiyya movement in 746.
