His life began in a place called Humeima. This is in the country we now call Jordan. He was born in the year 714. His brother, al-Saffah, was the first Abbasid caliph. Al-Mansur had to face many hard jobs to keep his power. He dealt with many revolts and fights from different groups. Some people in a place called Khorasan fought against him. He also had to stop a leader named Sunpadh from a revolt in 755.

Al-Mansur was a very busy leader. He rose at dawn every single day. He worked hard until the evening prayer. He even told his son to work hard too. He said not to put off today's work until tomorrow. He wanted to know everything happening in his lands. He even knew the price of figs in far away places. He used a secret service to stay informed about his people.

One of his biggest achievements was building a new city. In the year 762, he started building Madinat as-Salam. This name means "the city of peace." Most people know this city today as Baghdad.
